Downloadable game review: Megaman 9

Hey guys, Jobocan here.

Being an old-school gamer(started gaming when i had to strength to hold a controller).   Like a lot of old-school gamers, I grew up playing Megaman and other hard games.
You can only imagine how excited I was when I saw this:

zomg!

zomg!

Though it was first planned as a Wiiware title only, it was eventually announced for all current-gen home consoles. A few trailers and months later we finally got to experience the pure awesomeness that is Megaman 9.
I’m a bit late for a review, but it just came a few days ago on the PS3, so I needed to at least get to the end of the game before putting out a review… Well, here we go!

Kendo tidbits #1

So here’s the deal, from time to time, I’ll post about Kendo. What is Kendo you ask? Well that’s why I linked to Wikipedia just right there, just for you.  Ok so you are lazy and don’t want to click the link.  Well basically, Kendo is (nowaday) a competitive martial art that uses shinai to fight.  Those are a long sword made out of 4 bamboo sticks, representing a Japanese sword aka a katana.  I wouldn’t compare it to fencing (not that I know much about fencing), but it has a few similarities. So I’ll make you discover Kendo slowly by telling you my experiences as a beginner kendoka, from time to time.

This is what a shinai looks like

This is what a shinai looks like, mine has a lot of red stains on the handle, due to my shinai bag's inside being red.

I’ve started practicing Kendo back in May, so I have more or less about 4 months of experience so far, practicing usually twice a week, with a few skipped practice for different personnal reasons.  As for equipment, outside of the shinai right now, I’m using sweat pants and a tshirt, but by the end of November, I’ll be able to wear hakama and keikogi, and by next summer, the whole armor (bogu). Normal practice are usually about practicing your form, your footwork and your swing.  But every last Tuesday of the month, we practice Kendo KATA.  Those are done with a bokken or a bokuto (wooden katana), and are more complex combinations between two partners.

Those are divided between two types and require extreme concentrations, at least for a beginner like me.  The real katas, which are almost like a dance, is very choregraphed and has one follow the other’s move.  The second type, is newer apparently, and is more about practicing form and swings in a more practical way.  Yes, I know, this isn’t very clear, but tonight is only my second time doing those, so I’ll probably come back to it some other time.  And for now, that’s all.  Look forward for more!

Little BIG Planet – First impressions (basics + Level gameplay)

Thanks to Jobocan and mainly to another buddy of mine, I’ve fought my way through Eurogamer’s rushed give-away of LBP Beta keys almost a week ago now. I’ve given the game a good try through and through for a week now. The game is simply amazing, it delivers what has been hyped, and it’s not even the final build, and it’s only about 2% of the actual disc content.

So the game, like most knows, is divided in Story mode, creation mode and playing other people’s creations. All this is linked inside an interface represented as your spaceship, which you can decorate with stickers as you please. From there, you can access 3 different planets, the first one is for settings and personal stuff, like accessing your friends list and join anyone already in a game.

Random Curiosity’s Omni’s Fall 2008 anime preview!

You can find a very good preview of a lot of the upcoming anime series on here.

Now begs the question, what to watch? I’m trying to keep it low for now, but I’ll update with what I think looks interesting in a bit.

So in the end, a lot of things looks too good to pass on.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune

I have always hesitated to go ahead and try Naughty Dog’s PS3 title, critically acclaimed for its visuals and gameplay. I had given a shot at the demo back in February when I first got my PS3, but wasn’t very impressed, back then being in SD and the gunplay accent in the demo were two things that didn’t mix well for me for this game.

An HDTV and a few months later, I finally gave the retail game a try. Yes, I know, I’m late to the party. Actually the party would probably be over already, but Naughty Dog released trophy support for it and gave the game a revival of appeal even to those that had it all done before (at least for those excited over the trophies challenges). It’s on this note that I’m about to write my very first in-depth review of a game.

DS Review: Kirby Super Star Ultra

Hey everyone, Jobocan here, and bringing you the first review on Save Point!

Kirby has always been one of Nintendo’s really big names, and calling Kirby Super Star on the SNES one of the best games on a system would be quite the understatement. When I heard that the game was getting ported on the DS, I was really happy about it, and thought that taking one of the best SNES games and modifying it for the DS would be one of the best things ever.
Well after playing through most of it (96% to be exact) I must say I was almost right.

Welcome from me too!

Hi!

Jobocan already explained our goal with this blog, so I won’t repeat what he said, but still I welcome all potential readers and will skip already to the about me part.

About me

I’m a college graduate in Multimedia integration and now studying at L’Université du Québec en Outaouais in Communications and medias.  I’m working for the federal government part time as an Intranet coordinator assistant, which means I mostly work in the HTML part of our Intranet. I’m 24 years old and been playing games for about 20 years now, mostly since I’ve gotten my first console, a Sega Master System, along with games like Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Wonder Boy and Gangster Town!  On the anime side, I’ve watched some when I was a kid, my favorite back in the 80s probably was Astroboy (yes it predates that in origin, but I wasn’t born before that) and a bit later, such as Dragon Ball, then Dragon Ball Z.  It’s only back in early 2004 that I’ve learned the existence of online fansubs and rediscovered what was anime was. I since then watched a tons of those, been actually part of a fansub group, and bought my fair share too on the DVD side.  I’ll probably talk about manga too from time to time.  I’ve actually also been part of a big fansite, Bleach7, over there I was known as Ecchigo.  I’m still an admin over there, but I’ve been inactive for a while, it’s just a place with a few buddies for me now.

My goal for this blog, is mostly to improve my writing skills, which is most important in Communications. Hopefully I’ll be able to achieve this.  Look forward to my first real post shortly, an Uncharted review. It’s almost ready!

Welcome to Save Point!

Hello everyone and welcome to Save Point! This is Jobocan, one of the two authors you will see on this blog.

So now I’ll just talk a bit about what this blog will be about.

Kyolux (the other author on here) and I are big gamers and anime watchers, and we decided to start this blog to give our impressions on games and anime, as well as other stuff that we might come by.

Basically we’ll both be writting similar stuff. Reviews for new or old games/anime, impression on demos(if the demo comes earlier than the actual game) and betas, as well as reviews for other medias such as movies and music, or whatever else we come accross that we feel like writing about. This will pretty much be a “talk about whatever you want” kinda blog, though we will mostly be concentrating on games.

About Me
I’m a Web Developper for a multimedia company in Gatineau, Québec(Canada). 20 years old(will be 21 next month), i’ve been gaming… ever since I’ve been able to hold a controller in my hands. In my high school years I started watching anime and as of now i’ve seen a bit over 300 anime series (including some that i dropped or that i’m taking a break on). I was once a game reviewer for a website but the site failed fast because…. i don’t know actually… Anyways, now I’m done with college and am working a full-time job and thought it would be cool to start up a blog with my friend.

You can expect lots of posts from me in the following months.

Cheers!
